I visited in Winter, and was not here for the Hot Water, but to enjoy the beauty of the beach and the surroundings. It is a bit of a climb up the sand dune, (each side) and if you are not fit, could be a little bit of a challenge.
I found the beach was lovely and quiet, but has lovely views. Worth the trip even if not here for the Hot Water Beach.
There is warning signs re summer that the sand can be very hot, so if going then, be prepared with footwear, and consider your dog if you are taking one in summer.
So nice. Empty, beautiful, digging for hot water here is so much better than Coromandel....
Our most favourite place in the whole wide world! We call it Sunset Beach because, weather permitting, you are guaranteed to see the sun setting 365 days of the year - every night!
Hidden treasure in more ways than one. Sand from the car park was incredibly hot, need foot-ware. We didn’t have a spade, but cuckooed a hole, water amazingly hot
Beautiful big beach, although we didnt explore to find the hot water, the swim in the waves was worth it. Extremely hot sand walking over the sand dune, so covered shoes is a must. Take your shovel if your finding the hot water :)
Tide times are important but being December and and incoming tide we had a good sea swim. Area needs protecting as special. No fires and dunes need protecting. Spade handy .
Kawhia is another hot water beach, not as famous as the one near Cathedral Cove. It is clean and less exploited, no infrastructure for a large mass of tourists. Has a small changing room with a toilet (with toilet papers in place !), but no showers. To reach the beach, you need to go up a sand hill, it is less than 5 minutes, and your fitness level is well tested. Waves at the high tide were strong and soften as the tide lows. We didn’t have the chance to dig for hot water because we left before the tide went lower. Great place to relax with few users around. Must bring everything, including drinking water and food.
Great place to go. Not crowded at all just make sure you check the tide times to make sure you get there at low tide. Bring a shovel and dig yourself a hot tub. The sea was a nice temperature so cool off , waves good for a body board and the sand perfect for skim boarding. There are toilets by the car park.
